Heated tobacco devices consist of three elements: the heater, the charger and the tobacco units, also called Heatsticks. These tobacco units are smaller than traditional cigars and are marketed with different aromas, flavors and intensities. Their production, unlike cigars, involves subjecting the tobacco to an additional grinding process to be mixed with water, glycerin, fibers and guar gum (PMI-Science).

The heater is an electronic device composed mainly of a microcontroller chip capable of storing and transmitting information. It also contains a metal foil with traces of gold and platinum, where the tobacco unit is placed and heated to a controlled temperature to produce a nicotine aerosol. It is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (PMI-IQOS). The pocket charger consists of a housing, an electronic board with various microcomponents such as microcontrollers and a charger for the 2900 mAh lithium-ion battery, which in turn supplies power to the heater.

Some materials used in the production of electronic circuits and microprocessors are germanium, boron, gallium and arsenic, as well as gold or platinum, which can be contained in IQOS heating foils. Its production requires rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, both the one located in the heater and the one located in the charger, which in turn allows recharging the heater when it has already been used in at least two tobacco units. Some minerals required for the production of lithium batteries are cobalt, nickel, manganese and graphite.
